Theoretical Insights into the Effect of Different Numbers of Thiophene Groups on Hydrogen Bond Interaction and Excited-State Intramolecular Proton-Transfer Process for Flavonoid Derivatives.

In this study, we systematically explored the impact of varying the number of thiophene groups on the hydrogen bond interaction and excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) processes in flavonoid derivatives (STF, DTF, and TTF) using the density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory methods. Initially, a thorough analysis of the optimized geometric structures revealed that the intramolecular hydrogen bond in the S1 state is enhanced and gradually weakened as the number of thiophene groups increases. To gain a deeper understanding of the hydrogen bond interaction, topological analysis, interaction region indicator scatter plots, and isosurface plots were employed. These images provide further insights that align with the structural analysis. Additionally, we observed a red-shift in the electronic spectra (absorption and fluorescence spectra), which is primarily attributed to the narrowing of the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, as elucidated by the frontier molecular orbitals. Furthermore, a combined analysis between the hole-electron distribution and the transition density matrix heat map shows that electron excitation involves the unidirectional charge-transfer mechanism. In the end, by conducting relaxed potential energy curve scans, we found that an increase in the number of thiophene groups elevates the energy barrier for ESIPT, making it more challenging for the reaction. In summary, our study underscores the vital effect of thiophene-substituted numbers in modulating the ESIPT process, which is able to provide valuable insights for the design and synthesis of desired organic fluorescent probes in the future.

Ion and Molecular Sieving with Ultrathin Polydopamine Nanomembranes.

In contrast to biological cell membranes, it is still a major challenge for synthetic membranes to efficiently separate ions and small molecules, due to their similar sizes in the sub-nanometer range. Inspired by biological ion channels with their unique channel wall chemistry that facilitates ion sieving by ion-channel interactions, we report here the first free-standing, ultrathin (10-17nm) nanomembranes composed entirely of polydopamine (PDA) as ion and molecular sieves. These nanomembranes are obtained via an easily scalable electropolymerization strategy and provide nanochannels with various amine and phenolic hydroxyl groups that offer a favorable chemical environment for ion-channel electrostatic and hydrogen bond interactions. They exhibit remarkable selectivity for monovalent ions over multivalent ions and larger species with K+/Mg2+ of ≈4.2, K+/[Fe(CN)6]3- of ≈10.3, and K+/Rhodamine B of ≈273.0 in a pressure-driven process, as well as cyclic reversible pH-responsive gating properties. Infrared spectra reveal hydrogen bond formation between hydrated multivalent ions and PDA, which prevents the transport of multivalent ions and facilitates high selectivity. We propose chemically rich, free-standing, and pH-responsive PDA nanomembranes with specific interaction sites as customizable high-performance sieves for a wide range of challenging separation requirements. Engineering of a Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenase to improve substrate scope, stereoselectivity and regioselectivity.

Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenases belong to a family of flavin-binding proteins that catalyze the Baeyer-Villiger (BV) oxidation of ketones to produce lactones or esters, which are important intermediates in pharmaceuticals or sustainable materials. Phenylacetone monooxygenase (PAMO) from Thermobifida fusca with moderate thermostability catalyzes the oxidation of aryl ketone substrates, but is limited by high specificity and narrow substrate scope. In the present study, we applied loop optimization by loop swapping followed by focused saturation mutagenesis in order to evolve PAMO mutants capable of catalyzing the regioselective BV oxidation of cyclohexanone and cyclobutanone derivatives with formation of either normal or abnormal esters or lactones. We further modulated PAMO to increase enantioselectivity. Crystal structure studies indicate that rotation occurs in the NADP-binding domain and that the high B-factor region is predominantly distributed in the catalytic pocket residues. Computational analyses further revealed dynamic character in the catalytic pocket and reshaped hydrogen bond interaction networks, which is more favorable for substrate binding. Our study provides useful insights for studying enzyme-substrate adaptations.

Origin of Unprecedented Formation and Reactivity of FeIV═O Species via Oxygen Activation: Role of Noncovalent Interactions and Magnetic Coupling.

Emulating the capabilities of the soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) enzymes, which effortlessly activate oxygen at diiron(II) centers to form a reactive diiron(IV) intermediate Q, which then performs the challenging oxidation of methane to methanol, poses a significant challenge. Very recently, one of us reported the mononuclear complex [(cyclam)FeII(CH3CN)2]2+ (1), which performed a rare bimolecular activation of the molecule of O2 to generate two molecules of FeIV═O without the requirement of external proton or electron sources, similar to sMMO. In the present study, we employed the density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate this unique mechanism of O2 activation. We show that secondary hydrogen-bonding interactions between ligand N-H groups and O2 play a vital role in reducing the energy barrier associated with the initial O2 binding at 1 and O-O bond cleavage to form the FeIV═O complex. Further, the unique reactivity of FeIV═O species toward simultaneous C-H and O-H bond activation process has been demonstrated. Our study unveils that the nature of the magnetic coupling between the diiron centers is also crucial. Given that the influence of magnetic coupling and noncovalent interactions in catalysis remains largely unexplored, this unexplored realm presents numerous avenues for experimental chemists to develop novel structural and functional analogues of sMMO.

Unveiling a novel GJB2 dominant K22T mutation in a Chinese family with hearing loss.

Hearing loss constitutes one of the most prevalent conditions within the field of otolaryngology. Recent investigations have revealed that mutations in deafness-associated genes, including point mutations and variations in DNA sequences, can cause hearing impairments. With the ethology of deafness remaining unclear for a substantial portion of the affected population, further screenings for pathogenic mutations are imperative to unveil the underlying mechanisms. On this study, by using next-generation sequencing, we examine 129 commonly implicated deafness-related genes in a Chinese family with hearing loss, revealing a novel heterozygous dominant mutation in the GJB2 gene (GJB2: c.65T>G: p. Lys22Thr). This mutation consistently occurs in affected family members but is not detected in unaffected individuals, strongly suggesting its causative role in hearing loss. Structural analysis indicates potential disruption to the Cx26 gap junction channel's hydrogen bond and electrostatic interactions, aligning with predictions from the PolyPhen and SIFT algorithms. In conclusion, our study provides conclusive evidence that the identified heterozygous GJB2 mutation (GJB2: c.65T>G: p. Lys22Thr), specifically the K22T alteration, is the primary determinant of the family's deafness. This contribution enhances our understanding of the interplay between common deafness-associated genes and hearing loss, offering valuable insights for diagnostic guidance and the formulation of therapeutic strategies for this condition.

Ammonia-Responsive Colorimetric Film of Phytochemical Formulation (Alizarin) Grafted onto ZIF-8 Carrier with Poly(vinyl alcohol) and Sodium Alginate for Beef Freshness Monitoring.

In this study, we devised a photothermally stable phytochemical dye by leveraging alizarin in conjunction with the metal-organic framework ZIF-8 (AL@ZIF-8). The approach involved grafting alizarin into the microporous structure of ZIF-8 through physical adsorption and hydrogen-bonding interactions. AL@ZIF-8 significantly enhanced the photostability and thermostability of alizarin. The nanoparticles demonstrate substantial color changes in various pH environments, showcasing their potential for meat freshness monitoring. Furthermore, we introduced an intelligent film utilizing poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium alginate-AL@ZIF-8 (PA-SA-ZA) for detecting beef freshness. The sensor exhibited a superior water contact angle (52.34°) compared to the alizarin indicator. The color stability of the film was significantly enhanced under visible and UV light (ΔE < 5). During beef storage, the film displayed significant color fluctuations correlating with TVB-N (R2=0.9067), providing precise early warning signals for assessing beef freshness.

Design Strategies for Anti‐Freeze Electrolytes in Aqueous Energy Storage Devices at Low Temperatures

AbstractWith the continuous development of electrochemical energy storage technology, especially in the current pursuit of environmental sustainability and safety, aqueous energy storage devices, due to their high safety, environmental friendliness, and cost‐effectiveness, are becoming an important direction of development in the field of energy storage. Diverse application scenarios require that energy storage systems be capable of continuous power supply under low temperature conditions. However, conventional aqueous electrolytes freeze at extremely low temperatures, causing limited ion transport and slow reaction kinetics, degrading the performance of the energy storage system. The design of low‐temperature anti‐freeze aqueous electrolytes has become an effective way to address this issue. In this review, the deep connection between hydrogen bonds (HBs) interactions in aqueous electrolytes and the liquid‐to‐solid conversion process, and the fundamental principles of the anti‐freeze mechanism is first explored. Subsequently, a systematic categorization and discussion of the design strategies for low‐temperature anti‐freeze aqueous electrolytes are conducted. Finally, potential directions are proposed. This review aims to provide comprehensive scientific guidance and technical reference for the development of anti‐freeze aqueous electrolytes with excellent low‐temperature performance, thereby promoting the application and innovation of aqueous energy storage devices in low‐temperature environments.

An eutectic Mixture in the Tetrabutylammonium Bromide-Octanol System: Macroscopic and Microscopic Points of View.

An eutectic mixture of tetrabutylammonium bromide and octanol in the molar ratio 1-10 exhibited a melting point of -17°C. This system was investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy, in the liquid and in the solid state. Classical molecular dynamics was performed to study the fine details of the hydrogen bond interactions established in the mixture. Both octanol and the mixtures displayed an almost featureless far-infrared spectrum in the liquid state but it becomes highly structured in the solid phase. DFT calculations suggest that new vibrational modes appearing in the mixture at low temperatures may be related to the population of the higher energy conformers of the alcohol. Mid-infrared spectroscopy measurements evidenced no shift of the CH stretching bands in the mixture compared to the starting materials, while the OH stretching are blue shifted by a few cm-1. Consistently, molecular dynamics provides a picture of the mixture in which the hydrogen bonds (HB) of pure octanol are replaced by weaker HB formed with the TBA ion and the Br cation. Due to these interactions the ionic couple becomes more separated. In agreement with this model, the lengths of all HB are much larger than those observed in acids in previous studies.

Self-Healing Polyurethane Elastomers with Superior Tensile Strength and Elastic Recovery Based on Dynamic Oxime-Carbamate and Hydrogen Bond Interactions.

The preparation of self-healing polyurethane elastomers (PUEs) incorporating dynamic bonds is of considerable practical significance. However, developing a PUE with outstanding mechanical properties and high self-healing efficiency poses a significant challenge. Herein, this work has successfully developed a series of self-healing PUEs with various outstanding properties through rational molecular design. These PUEs incorporate m-xylylene diisocyanate and reversible dimethylglyoxime as hard segment, along with polytetramethylene ether glycol as soft segment. A significant amount of dynamic oxime-carbamate and hydrogen bonds are formed in hard segment. The microphase separated structure of the PUEs enables them to be colorless with a transparency of >90%. Owing to the chemical composition and multiple dynamic interactions, the PUEs are endowed with ultra-high tensile strength of 34.5MPa, satisfactory toughness of 53.9MJ m-3, and great elastic recovery both at low and high strains. The movement of polymer molecular chains and the dynamic reversible interactions render a self-healing efficiency of 101% at 70°C. In addition, this self-healing polyurethane could still maintain high mechanical properties after recycling. This study provides a design strategy for the preparation of a comprehensive polyurethane with superior overall performance, which holds wide application prospects in the fields of flexible displays and solar cells.

Supramolecular Annihilator with DPA Parallelly Arranged by Multiple Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions for Enhanced Triplet–Triplet Annihilation Upconversion

The triplet annihilator is a critical component for triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC); both the photophysical properties of the annihilator and the intermolecular orientation have pivotal effects on the overall efficiency of TTA-UC. Herein, we synthesized two supramolecular annihilators A-1 and A-2 by grafting 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) fragments, which have been widely used as triplet annihilators for TTA-UC, on a macrocyclic host—pillar[5]arenes. In A-1, the orientation of the two DPA units was random, while, in A-2, the two DPA units were pushed to a parallel arrangement by intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. The two compounds showed very similar photophysical properties and host–guest binding affinities toward electron-deficient guests, but showed totally different TTA-UC emissions. The UC quantum yield of A-2 could be optimized to 13.7% when an alkyl ammonia chain-attaching sensitizer S-2 was used, while, for A-1, only 5.1% was achieved. Destroying the hydrogen-bonding interactions by adding MeOH to A-2 significantly decreased the UC emissions, demonstrating that the parallel orientations of the two DPA units contributed greatly to the TTA-UC emissions. These results should be beneficial for annihilator designs and provide a new promising strategy for enhancing TTA-UC emissions.

Biomimetic Hydrogen‐Bonded G ⋅ C ⋅ G ⋅ C Quadruplex within a Tetraphenylethene‐Based Octacationic Spirobicycle in Water

AbstractIn biological systems, nucleotide quadruplexes (such as G‐quadruplexes) in DNA and RNA that are held together by multiple hydrogen bonds play a crucial functional role. The biomimetic formation of these hydrogen‐bonded quadruplexes captured by artificial systems in water poses a significant challenge but can offer valuable insights into these complex functional structures. Herein, we report the formation of biomimetic hydrogen‐bonded G ⋅ C ⋅ G ⋅ C quadruplex captured by a tetraphenylethene (TPE) based octacationic spirobicycle (1). The spirobicyclic compound possesses a three‐dimensional (3D) crossing dual‐cavity structure, which enables the encapsulation of four d(GpC) dinucleotide molecules, thereby realizing 1 : 4 host–guest complexation in water. The X‐ray structure reveals that four d(GpC) molecules further form a two‐layer G ⋅ C ⋅ G ⋅ C quadruplex with Watson–Crick hydrogen bonds, which are stabilized within the dual hydrophobic cavities of 1 through the cooperative non‐covalent interactions of hydrogen bonds, CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions, and hydrophobic effect. Due to the dynamically‐rotational propeller chirality of TPE units, 1 with adaptive chirality can further serve as a chiroptical sensor to exhibit opposite Cotton effects with mirror‐image CD spectra for the pH‐dependent hydrogen‐bonded assemblies of d(GpC) including the Watson–Crick G ⋅ C ⋅ G ⋅ C (pH 9.22) and Hoogsteen G ⋅ C+ ⋅ G ⋅ C+ (pH 5.74) quartets through the host–guest chirality transfer in water.

Graphene Oxide-Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogel-Coated Solid-Contact Ion-Selective Electrodes for Wearable Sweat Potassium Ion Sensing.

Solid-contact ion-selective electrodes (SC-ISEs) with ionophore-based polymer-sensitive membranes have been the major devices in wearable sweat sensors toward electrolyte analysis. However, the toxicity of ionophores in ion-selective membranes (ISMs), for example, valinomycin (K+ ion carrier), is a significant challenge, since the ISM directly contacts the skin during the tests. Herein, we report coating a hydrogel of graphene oxide-poly(vinyl alcohol) (GO-PVA) on the ISM to fabricate hydrogel-based SC-ISEs. The hydrogen bond interaction between GO sheets and PVA chains could enhance the mechanical strength through the formation of a cross-linking network. Comprehensive electrochemical tests have demonstrated that hydrogel-coated K+-SC-ISE maintains Nernstian response sensitivity, high selectivity, and anti-interference ability compared with uncoated K+-SC-ISE. A flexible hydrogel-based K+ sensing device was further fabricated with the integration of a solid-contact reference electrode, which has realized the monitoring of sweat K+ in real time. This work highlights the possibility of hydrogel coating for fabricating biocompatible wearable potentiometric sweat electrolyte sensors.

Taxifolin alleviate metabolic and neurochemical alterations in the hippocampus and cortex of rats with rotenone-induced toxicity: In vivo and in silico insight

IntroductionExposure to rotenone could directly affects the function of mitochondrial which leads to neurodegeneration. This study evaluated the therapeutic potential of taxifolin (Huāqí sōng dài; 花旗松甙) to alleviate metabolic and neurochemical alterations in the hippocampal and cortical region of brain of rotenone-toxified rats. MethodsMale Wistar rats were subcutaneously administered 1.5 mg/kg rotenone for 10 days, followed by post-treatment with varying doses of taxifolin (0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg) for 3 days through the same route. Activities of mitochondrial complex I, membrane ion pump and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were evaluated in the hippocampus and cortex of the brain of rotenone-toxified rats. Markers of neurotransmitter metabolism and oxidative stress were also biochemically estimated and molecular interaction between taxifolin and tyrosine hydroxylase, monoamine oxidase, glutamine synthetase and Na+/K+ATPase was determined by in silico simulation. ResultsTaxifolin attenuated dysfunction of mitochondrial, Na+/K+ATPase, LDH and modulate neurotransmitter metabolism. Also, the elicited oxidative stress was mitigated by taxifolin in the hippocampus and cortex of the brain of rotenone-toxified rats. Furthermore, taxifolin showed excellent interactions with targeted enzymes in silico. The highest binding affinity was recorded in taxifolin-tyrosine hydroxylase complex. Hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interactions were the two key molecular interaction between the taxifolin and targeted enzymes. DiscussionTaxifolin alleviates metabolic and neurochemical aberrations in rotenone-induced neurotoxicity model in rats in vivo and exhibits promising interactions with specific target enzymes that are key to neurotransmission in silico.

Dual-ligand lanthanide metal-organic framework based ratiometric fluorescent platform for visual monitoring of aminoglycoside residues in food samples

Herein, a dual-emission Eu metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) is prepared and used as the ratiometric fluorescence probe for ultrasensitive detection of aminoglycoside antibiotics (AGs). Due to the strong hydrogen bond interactions between AGs and Eu-MOF, the blue emission is enhanced while the red emission has little fluctuation in Eu-MOF with the addition of AGs, thus a good linear relationship with the logarithm of AGs concentrations from 0.001 to 100 μg/mL can be established for quantitative analysis. Good sensitivity with the detection limit of 0.33 ng/mL for apramycin, 0.32 ng/mL for amikacin and 0.30 ng/mL for kanamycin is achieved. The proposed assay demonstrates good selectivity and applicability for determination of AGs in real milk and honey samples. The Eu-MOF materials are further fabricated as fluorescent test papers for facile visual detection. The as-established ratio fluorescence platform offers a portable and economical way for rapid monitoring AGs residues in complex food samples.

Bionanocomposites preparation by design: Planning based on the modification of ceria nanoparticles by polydopamine interleaved with the chitosan biopolymer

Herein, the marine source polymer, chitosan (CS), was utilized to fabricate bionanocomposites by mussel-inspired sonochemical assisted method. The surface modified nanofillers as active ingredients were provided by assembling biomimetic polydopamine (PDA) onto the CeO2 nanoparticles through redox polymerization as a surface modification technology. Standard spectroscopic methods were used to characterize the resulting cerium oxide PDA-treated nanoparticles (NPs). CeO2/PDA/CS nanocomposites (NC)s were manufactured using a sonochemical process by inserting nanostructured fillers into the CS polymer matrix. The morphological features and structural characteristics of NCs were considered using field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis techniques. It was found that based on the biomimetic PDA layer the hydrogen bond interactions between CS biopolymer functional units with PDA functional units have occurred. Therefore, a pleasant distribution of surface adapted NPs in macromolecular matrix in the form of nanostructured composites was observed.

Silver(I) Octanuclear Complexes Containing N'-(4-Oxotiazolidin-2-Iliden)picolinohydrazonamide and Nitrate as Bridge Ligands. An Example of Solvatomorphism?

The versatile coordination chemistry of (2Z,N'E)-N'-(4-oxothiazolidin-2-ylidene)picolinohydrazonamide (HAmDHotaz) facilitated the synthesis of new complexes with different silver(I) salts. This paper describes the synthesis and characterization, through elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques (when solubility permits), of a series of compounds that illustrate the coordinative and structural diversity achievable with the HAmDHotaz ligand. Five silver clusters containing the [Ag8(AmDHotaz)4]4+ nucleus were structurally analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and were found to exhibit solvomorphism. The compositions of these are [Ag8(AmDHotaz)4(NO3)3(MeOH)(H2O)](NO3)·MeOH·7.5H2O (1), {[Ag8(AmDHotaz)4(NO3)3(H2O)2](NO3)·9.5(H2O)}n (2), {[Ag8(AmDHotaz)4(NO3)3(H2O)2](NO3)·11.5(H2O)}n (2a), {[Ag8(AmDHotaz)4(NO3)2(H2O)2](NO3)(OH)·6H2O}n (3), and {[Ag8(AmDHotaz)4(NO3)2(H2O)](NO3)(OH)·4.5H2O}n (3a). Argentophilic interactions are present in each of the octanuclear structures, where Ag···Ag distances range from 2.828(2) to 2.986(1) Å. These distances are influenced by crystal packing, determined by the counterion and solvent molecules in the structure. In the solvatomorphs, solvent molecules were observed to be disordered. Various hydrogen-bonding interactions, such as N-H···O-N, O-H···O, N-H···O═C, C-H···O-N, and π-π stacking interactions, contribute to the crystal packing. The influence of these weak interactions on the crystal packing was further analyzed using DFT calculations and Bader's theory of atoms-in-molecules, with a focus on argentophilic interactions and Ag···S interactions.

Multifunctional wearable Spider-Silk Inspired fabric for personal protection in extreme environments

Personal protective equipment (PPE) plays a vital role in healthcare, industry, and military settings, offering essential protection against various environmental hazards. However, the growing environmental challenges and demand for multifunctional integration make developing PPE that outperforms traditional single-function equipment a significant challenge. Herein, we present a flexible and wearable sandwich-structured film, fabricated by integrating an MXene core layer with Gd(OH)3/TPU outer layers through electrospinning and vacuum filtration process, simultaneously offering neutron and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, energy harvesting, and thermal management. Mimicking spider silk's crystalline and amorphous regions, the outer layers integrate Gd(OH)3 nanorods into TPU nanofibers, thereby enhancing hydrogen bonding and achieving a high tensile strength of 22.94 MPa. Extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions firmly bind the MXene conductive core layer to the gadolinium-rich magnetic outer layers, providing excellent neutron (μ = 22.95 cm−1) and EMI shielding (SE = 35.1 dB). Additionally, the film also functions as a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), capturing kinetic energy to power low-voltage electronic devices, reducing reliance on external power in harsh settings. Remarkably, its superior Joule heating capability rapidly reaches various temperature (up to 78.5 ℃) by regulating external voltage to meet diverse user requirements. This study paves the way for future advancements in the realm of multifunctional PPE.

Gas solubility enhancement and hydrogen bond recombination regulated by terahertz electromagnetic field for rapid formation of gas hydrates

The low solubility of methane in water and the formation of hydrate film at methane-water interface restrict interfacial mass transfer between methane and water, thereby impeding the rapid formation of hydrate. Herein, THz electromagnetic field (TEMF) is introduced to destroy hydrogen bonds through resonance with water molecules for decreasing methane-water interfacial tension (IFT) and improving methane solubility in water. Thereafter, TEMF is removed to restore hydrogen bonding interaction for hydrate nucleation within bulk-phase water rather than at methane-water interface, thereby accelerating hydrate formation. The results show that a TEMF at 15.8 THz can increase methane solubility by 50-fold and provide more nucleation sites for hydrate formation by lowering the IFT by 15-fold. Furthermore, the hydrate nucleation follows “blob” nucleation at low solubility and Local Structuring Mechanism nucleation at high solubility. The higher solubility of methane shortens the induction period of hydrate nucleation form 58.5 ns to 29 ns. Particularly, small 512 cages form preferentially regardless of nucleation pathway. The underlying mechanism for TEMF-induced the acceleration of hydrate formation is attributed to the transition of water phase from a disordered to an ordered structure. This transition arises from the resonance of the TEMF with water molecules, disrupting the hydrogen bond between water molecules and providing sufficient driving force for their rearrangement after removing the TEMF. In rearrangement process, weakly hydrogen-bond interactions correspondingly are converted into strongly hydrogen-bond ones. These findings are expected to improve the understanding of hydrate formation mechanism and promote the applications of terahertz technology in gas hydrates.

Revealing Hydrogen Bond Effect in Rechargeable Aqueous Zinc-Organic Batteries.

The surrounding hydrogen bond (H-bond) interaction around the active sites plays indispensable functions in enabling the organic electrode materials (OEMs) to fulfill their roles as ion reservoirs in aqueous zinc-organic batteries (ZOBs). Despite important, there are still no works could fully shed its real effects light on. Herein, quinone-based small molecules with a H-bond evolution model has been rationally selected to disclose the regulation and equilibration of H-bond interaction between OEMs, and OEM and the electrolyte. It has been found that only a suitable H-bond interaction could make the OEMs fully liberate their potential performance. Accordingly, the 2,5-diaminocyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione (DABQ) with elaborately designed H-bond structure exhibits a capacity of 193.3 mA h g-1 at a record-high mass loading of 66.2 mg cm-2 and 100% capacity retention after 1500 cycles at 5 A g-1. In addition, the DABQ//Zn battery also possesses air-rechargeable ability by utilizing the chemistry redox of proton. Our results put forward a specific pathway to precise utilization of H-bond to liberate the performance of OEMs.
